The Port Isabel, Texas lighthouse is a landmark in the Rio Grande valley.  It was built in 1853 and was in use until 1905.  It became a state park in 1952.  Visitors can climb the spiral staircase inside the lighthouse to the top to overlook  the costal plains of the surrounding area, and the Laguna Madre and South Padre Island.  It is the only lighthouse on the Texas coast that is open to the public.
